On-Site Frozen Section Services

Rapid Intraoperative Pathology When Timely Decisions Matter

Mid-Florida Pathology provides on-site frozen section services designed to support surgeons with rapid intraoperative pathologic assessment when diagnostic information is needed during a surgical procedure.

Frozen section evaluation allows selected tissue specimens to be rapidly processed, examined microscopically, and interpreted by a pathologist while the patient remains in the operating room. The findings can provide important information that assists the surgical team in making informed intraoperative decisions.

Comprehensive Intraoperative Consultation

Depending on the clinical circumstances and specimen, frozen section consultation may assist with:

  • Evaluation of surgical margins
  • Assessment of selected lesions for the presence of malignancy
  • Preliminary characterization of tissue or tumor
  • Confirmation that representative diagnostic tissue has been obtained
  • Evaluation of lymph nodes and other selected surgical specimens
  • Guidance for additional tissue sampling when appropriate

Because not every specimen or diagnostic question is appropriate for frozen section analysis, our pathologists work closely with the surgical team to determine the most effective approach for each case.

On-Site Pathology Expertise

Mid-Florida Pathology’s on-site services bring the expertise of our pathologists directly into the surgical environment, facilitating efficient communication between the pathologist and surgeon.

Clinical history, operative findings, imaging, and the surgeon’s specific intraoperative question can be correlated with the microscopic findings to provide a focused and clinically meaningful interpretation.

Direct physician-to-physician communication also allows important findings to be conveyed promptly to the surgical team.

From Intraoperative Consultation to Final Diagnosis

Frozen section interpretation represents an intraoperative assessment and is followed by routine permanent-section processing for definitive histopathologic evaluation.

When appropriate, additional tissue sections, special stains, immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, or other ancillary studies may be performed as part of the final evaluation.

This approach combines the immediate value of intraoperative consultation with the comprehensive diagnostic assessment available through permanent histopathology.

Quality, Efficiency, and Responsive Service

Successful frozen section services require coordination among surgeons, operating room personnel, histology professionals, and pathologists.

Mid-Florida Pathology is committed to providing efficient specimen handling, high-quality frozen section preparation, responsive pathologist availability, and clear communication throughout the intraoperative consultation process.
