Gastrointestinal Biopsy Interpretation
Endoscopic biopsies are often small specimens containing subtle but clinically important findings. Their interpretation requires experience with the full spectrum of gastrointestinal disease and an understanding of the clinical and endoscopic context in which the specimen was obtained.
Mid-Florida Pathology provides specialized interpretation of upper and lower gastrointestinal biopsies, including specimens obtained during esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy.

The histopathologic assessment of Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis can play an important role in establishing a diagnosis, evaluating disease activity, identifying complications, and monitoring patients with longstanding inflammatory bowel disease.
Our pathologists evaluate biopsies for features of chronicity and activity, patterns of mucosal injury, granulomatous inflammation when present, dysplasia, and other findings that may help distinguish inflammatory bowel disease from infectious, medication-related, ischemic, and other causes of gastrointestinal injury.
For surveillance specimens, particular attention is given to identifying and appropriately classifying dysplastic changes that may affect subsequent clinical and endoscopic management.
Barrett Esophagus and Gastrointestinal Dysplasia
Accurate recognition and classification of dysplasia are particularly important in patients with Barrett esophagus, inflammatory bowel disease, gastric intestinal metaplasia, adenomatous polyps, and other gastrointestinal precursor lesions.
Because distinctions between reactive atypia, indefinite changes, low-grade dysplasia, high-grade dysplasia, and invasive malignancy may significantly influence patient management, these cases require careful morphologic assessment and clinicopathologic correlation.
